Alice Poole has worked on listed and period buildings for over 25 years and strongly believes that the buildings should be preserved for future generations. However she also feels that houses are family homes and, within reason, they need to be able to be extended and adapted to suit the needs of modern families who do not have servants and use properties differently to past generations. For example, kitchens, in the past, were the domain of servants but are now the nucleus of the modern house. There are also machines and appliances that are a requirement of modern day living but need to be housed, preferably unobtrusively. It is also logical to assume that if the original architects were designing houses today they would work to achieve the requirements and aspirations of modern clients in the current environment in the same way as they did in the past. Alice Poole Architects work closely with the local planning authorities to achieve results that are acceptable to all.
